Chairman Senate responds to the criticism on controversial bill

Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani has offered to resign and face an investigation due to criticism over a bill that aims to increase the benefits given to past and future heads of the upper house of Parliament.

Earlier this month, the Senate passed a controversial bill proposing lifelong security for former Senate chairmen, with at least 10 people protecting them. The bill also suggests that the government pay for the travel expenses of their household staff and family members. The bill is currently waiting for approval from the National Assembly.

During an interview with a private TV channel, Sanjrani responded to concerns and questions about the bill. he defended the bill, saying it was meant to bring order and address financial issues. He claimed it would not add extra costs to the government, but the PPP party refused to support it due to the country’s economic situation.

He said he had not asked for a raise in his salary and never claimed travel or daily allowances. He also mentioned that he and his wife personally covered their household expenses.

“I’m ready to be held accountable, and an audit should be conducted. If any wrongdoing is found, I’ll step down from my Senate position,” he stated.

He acknowledged that being the Senate chairman was a prestigious position but clarified that he didn’t receive any special benefits. Sanjrani suggested that if the country’s situation improved, the Senate chairman should have ten planes instead of just one.

“People should be given good benefits so they can work. Why push them to do wrong things?” he questioned.
